NEAL Ardley believes Notts County have been given something to “build on” and vowed he and his players are trying to hit top gear in the race for National League promotion.

The Magpies had fallen behind inside two minutes away against Boreham Wood on Tuesday night when a superb strike from Tyrone Marsh flew past goalkeeper Sam Slocombe.

Notts came close to an equaliser when Nathan Ashmore denied Connell Rawlinson’s header before Kabongo Tshimanga extended the hosts’ lead with a terrific finish after the break.

But Alex Lacey’s goal from close range reduced the deficit and three minutes from time Inih Effiong scored from the spot after Kyle Wootton had seen a header handled on the line.

The result meant Notts have picked up four points from their last two games and Magpies boss Ardley has challenged his players to go on an unbeaten run.

“It’s something to build on,” he said.

“Two games isn’t enough but it’s a start.

“It keeps us ticking along until we are flowing again.

“We’ve just got to keep carrying on because now we’ve got two tough games against Yeovil Town.

“We’ve got to try to stay unbeaten, try to pick up points because they are not easy to get.

“It’s a start, that’s all it is.” Ardley said he was impressed by the character of his players and says it provided further evidence of their eagerness to find momentum in the promotion race.

“We’ve played well earlier in the season not won games and the performance has been really good,” he said.

“But all we talk about is the fact we’ve not won or drawn a game.

“We’ve won a game at the weekend and performed solidly.

“Against Boreham Wood, we are 2-0 down away from home, we’ve chased the game and shown great spirit to come back.

“Personally, at this point in time, I think I should be just speaking how it is. The boys are giving everything. They are going through a tough period and we are determined to come out of it.

“We’ve picked up four points from two away games and for me I would rather talk about the fact we’ve picked up points.”
