VILLAGERS FEAR DEVELOPMENT WLL BE ‘AN EYESORE’

PLANS for a new homes development have divided opinion in a Nottinghamshire village.

A scheme for up to 55 new homes in Radcliffe-on-trent was approved earlier this year, despite objection from residents who voiced concerns over noise and traffic.

But others said the plans would be “good for the area”, bringing in more money to the local economy.

Detailed plans for the new properties south of Shelford Road were approved by Rushcliffe Borough Council’s planning committee in February.

Radcliffe-on-trent Parish Council objected to the project, calling for a wider strip of land to act as a “buffer” between the site and existing properties nearby.

The application was submitted by a company called Countryside Properties.

Lauren Bolus, who lives on the new 400-home estate nearby, said: “I think the development will be good for the area and the local businesses here.

“This is our first home, we have moved into the new builds opposite. It’s a nice little area.

“We wanted a pub in a nice village, which enticed us to live here. Our neighbours have moved from a wide radius.

“I can see the angst about it, but I think it will do a lot for the village.”

She added that the main street through the village “does get busy at weekends”.

Ms Bolus, 27, added: “I get that it’s a shame because it will be an eyesore. We loved having fields on one side and looking at the lambs.”

Rachel Hunt, 40, lives next to the site of the new development.

She said: “I’m not pleased about it but there’s nothing we can do now.

“The immediate neighbours were worried about the visual aspect, traffic and how it will impact local facilities too.

“The noise will make an impact. “The schools here are quite crowded.

“It will also affect house prices for people around here.”

Joanne Bright, 49, said: “We’ll have to wait and see what it is like when it’s done.

“I think it will bring traffic in as well as more trucks, but it is busy here anyway.

“I’ve not heard any noise from the other development so it’s not generally affecting me at the moment.

“They’ve got to build more houses somewhere.”

A resident who did not wish to be named said: “It’s a shame.

“It’s nice to see some fields and lambs nearby, but people have got to have houses too.

“Radcliffe used to be small and it’s just getting bigger. Eventually, all the villages will be joined up.

“They’ll need new shops and there’s not enough schools.

“We’ve only got a tiny doctor’s surgery too.”
