Speed camera in the ‘wrong place’
HUCKNALL residents say “something needs to be done” in an area where a speed camera is set to be installed.
The camera will be placed on the A611 Hucknall Bypass near its roundabout with Hucknall Lane and Nottingham Road.
Residents have spoken out about problems with speeding near the roundabout and on its surrounding roads which they say is plaguing the area.
Work is set to start on installing the camera tomorrow, to enforce the national speed limit of 60mph on the road.
However, some locals have raised concerns the cameras may be better used in a different area rather than on the bypass itself.
Rita Standen, who has lived on nearby Nottingham Road for 43 years, said: “They’re putting it in the wrong place - they want one on here, it’s a residential road.
“You have cars flying up and down this road - it’s horrendous.
“It never used to be as bad as it is around here, but we’ve had a lot of new developments and it’s got a lot busier. It’s terrible.
“I want something to be done on this road, not on the bypass - I don’t think that will solve the problem.”
There have been numerous problems reported on roads nearby on what is a very busy stretch of road linking Hucknall with Bulwell.
Residents who live next to a roundabout a little further down near Moor Bridge have previously stated driving there is “like playing Russian roulette”.
One man, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “It’s a racetrack around here.
“There were cars racing and revving their engines just yesterday. I’m a taxi driver so I know the roads and it is awful around here for speeding and people driving like they shouldn’t. It’s ridiculous.
“Having said that, they want it in the middle section by the Texaco garage - not right by the roundabout, I don’t think that’s the right place for it.”
Meanwhile Lisa Stone, who has owned The Sandwich Bar on Hucknall Lane for 20 years, said: “I’d think a camera would be good.
“When you are walking next to the road, you can feel the vehicles go by at the speed they do - all it would take was a fuel spillage or something and it would be so dangerous.
“Something needs to be done around here, definitely. A speed camera should help and I’m all for it.”
