Family’s horror as armed robbers burst into shop
MEN CONFRONTED MUM AND DAUGHTER, 13, WITH BASEBALL BAT AND KITCHEN KNIFE
A SHOPKEEPER and her 13-yearold daughter were left terrified when two masked men armed with a baseball bat and kitchen knife burst into their shop.
The incident took place at the Gilthill Store in Eastwood Road, Kimberley, shortly after 7.45pm on Sunday.
Lakmini Muthu was looking after the shop with her daughter while her husband Anthony Muthu, 46, was asleep in their house at the back of the shop.
The intruders, who were wearing masks and hoods, hit Mr Muthu over the head before stealing cash and cigarettes.
Police say the men then fled up Truman Street and on to Lawn Mill Road.
Mr Muthu told the Post: “I was sleeping and so I didn’t realise what was going on.
“They hit me in the back of the head and were asking ‘where’s the money.’
He then ran away from the house. “I came back to the house and we asked for help.
“I am worried about my daughter.
She is scared and having trouble sleeping at night after what happened.”
The two men targeted Mrs Muthu when they first arrived, brandishing a knife after bursting through the front door of the shop.
She said: “It was very scary. I was very shocked – I thought ‘who is this?’
“They had a big knife, it all happened when I was in the shop – they also took some things. All I could see were their eyes. It was very scary.”
Detectives investigating the incident are keen to speak with anyone who may have witnessed what happened, or seen two men acting suspiciously in the area at around the time of the incident.
DC Bethany Sumner, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Luckily nobody was seriously hurt during this incident but it was undoubtedly a shocking and deeply upsetting experience for the victims.
“Nottinghamshire Police takes robbery offences very seriously and will devote whatever resources are necessary in tracking down offenders and bringing them to justice.
“We’d particularly like to speak to anybody who may have seen two men on Truman Street or Lawn Mill Road shortly after this incident.”
Anyone with any information on this case is urged to contact Nottinghamshire Police as soon as possible quoting incident 640 of April 11.
