‘FAULTY’ SPEED CAMERA WON’T STOP FLASHING
INNOCENT DRIVERS FEAR GETTING A TICKET WHEN THEY GO PAST IT
MOTORISTS are worried they’ll be wrongly given speeding tickets – because of a malfunctioning speed camera which has been constantly flashing.
The camera is located on Daleside Road East in Colwick, just outside the Toby Carvery pub - a road thousands of vehicles use every day.
A video taken on Friday showed the camera flashing even when no cars were going past.
Nottinghamshire County Council, which operates the camera, says it is aware of an “issue” and checks are now under way to try and resolve it.
A spokesperson for the county council said: “The safer highways team from Via East Midlands are aware of an issue with the speed camera on the A612 Colwick Loop Road and will be sending a maintenance operative from the camera’s manufacturer to make any repairs necessary.”
The Post approached the council for further comment on whether any motorists have been fined as a result of the problem – and if so how many. There was no response at the time of publication.
Lucy Chilvers, of Netherfield, captured what was happening on video. She said: “I noticed it flashing and saw nothing was going through at the time. I went back to my house and cycled past and just watched – it was flashing constantly. People are worrying they are going to get a ticket - which wouldn’t be fair. Everyone has been through enough at the minute, it feels like it would be kicking people when they’re down.
“I don’t know how long it’s been malfunctioning, so there could be some people who are given a ticket by mistake.”
Taxi driver Mohammed Shanaz said: “I was driving along at my normal speed, I have no points on my licence, and all of a sudden saw a flashing light. I thought it was lightning! I looked through the mirror and the camera was still flashing.
“To be honest I’m still worried I am going to get fined for it. There was definitely a problem with it.”
