A WATER leak caused schools to close and affected supplies to people’s homes.

Severn Trent Water confirmed that one of its “larger pipes” had burst yesterday morning near to the Gedling Access Road construction site at Lambley Lane.

Severn Trent issued its first report shortly before 8am, but one resident contacted the Post to say their water had been off since at least 6am.

Homes within at least two postcodes - NG3 and NG4 - were said to be “without water”, although it was unclear exactly how many.

Nottinghamshire County Council tweeted: “The Gedling Access Road team are aware of the Severn Trent Water pipe bursting overnight and the impact this is having on the local area.

“Rest assured, Severn Trent Water are out on site and partners are supporting them through their repair works, in order to resolve this issue.”

At least four schools in the Gedling area had to close to pupils due to the issue, including Priory Junior School, Phoenix Infant and Nursery School, Parkdale Primary School and later, Carlton Le Willows.

A spokesperson for Carlton Le Willows said: “The disruption of the local water supply has caused a total loss of water at Carlton le Willows Academy.

“Therefore, on health and safety grounds the school has been closed for rest of the day. Severn Trent Water has indicated supply will return later this afternoon so we hope to reopen tomorrow.”

Sylvia Offler, 84, who lives near Lambley Lane, said: “I noticed when I was filling the kettle there was no power in the tap. The shower was just dribbling, too. I thought it might have been the boiler and it was too early to phone neighbours.

“When I popped out earlier I saw all the Severn Trent teams all around the drain on Lambley Lane.”

Severn Trent Water teams were then seen in Westdale Lane East, in Carlton, where one lane was partially blocked at the junction with Adbolton Avenue, preventing access. This caused some delays to traffic in the area.

Wayne Davies, 51, of Westdale Lane, said he’d noticed the reduced water pressure.

“Severn Trent notified us first thing, they worked very quickly, I’m quite impressed,” he said. “I’ve really got nothing negative to say.”

A resident of Adbolton Avenue, who did not wish to be named, said: “We’ve experienced low pressure this morning - but it’s not gone off completely.

“I didn’t realise there was an issue as I did my washing this morning. But I heard about the school up the road (Phoenix primary) being closed.”

Supplies were reported to have returned just after noon.

A Severn Trent Water spokeswoman said: “We’re pleased to say some customers’ water supplies are now back on, and we’re continuing work to get everything back to normal for everyone else.

“We’re really sorry to those who are still affected and our engineers are moving water around our network, operating valves and will be using tankers to inject water directly into the network to help get supplies on for everyone.

“The pipe that’s burst is one of our larger pipes so we’re really thankful for everyone’s patience while we continue to work on this complicated repair.

“As work continues, bottled water is also being delivered to our most vulnerable customers and again, we’re incredibly sorry for the disruption that’s been caused and it will be our absolute priority to make sure everything is back to normal quickly.”

The spokeswoman confirmed that the work taking place between Adbolton Avenue and Westdale Lane East was to allow tankers to inject water into the network.
