A HIT-AND-RUN driver who failed to stop after crashing into a woman on Tuesday has been given a suspended jail sentence.

The woman was knocked into the air when David Williams drove his grey Mercedes into her as she crossed Withern Road at the junction with Bradfield Road in the Broxtowe Estate.

Detectives said she was “completely powerless” during the shocking incident.

She looked both ways before crossing but Williams turned into Withern Road, cutting the corner without indicating and travelling on the wrong side at around 3.15pm.

Passers-by rushed to help her as she lay on the ground.

But she was not seriously injured and was discharged from hospital within 24 hours, police said.

Officers later identified and seized the grey series 200 Mercedes and Williams, of Penrith Crescent, Aspley, then handed himself in to the Bridewell Custody Suite on Wednesday.

The 38-year-old appeared at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court yesterday and received six months in prison suspended for 18 months for dangerous driving, as well as a concurrent six-week suspended sentence for failing to stop.

He pleaded guilty to both offences.

Williams was also banned from driving for 36 months and ordered to pay £800 compensation.

Detective Inspector Ruby Burrow said: “We take hit-and-run incidents extremely seriously. They can be really upsetting for people involved, even if they’re lucky enough to escape injury, so it’s important we do everything we can to find those responsible.

“We had been making good progress with the investigation and had gained a named suspect shortly after recovering the vehicle which has now led to a man being quickly held to account by the courts.

“We’re grateful that the woman wasn’t seriously injured and is now recovering at home, having been treated in hospital.” Residents spoke of their shock and dismay at the incident. Donella Cull, 48, said: “It’s usually all right around here. Every once and a while someone will go by too fast though.

“I hope they have a conscience to come forward and own up to what they did.” After the incident, the road was taped off for some time. One woman, who did not wish to be named, said: “I heard about it from someone, and I was so shocked.

“It’s not something you hear every day and you don’t think that could happen where you live. “You see the odd fast car, but this is like something off TV. Especially as there are usually children around here too.”
