A COUNCIL crackdown on louts dumping household waste and bulky items in streets across a Nottinghamshire district has led to a number of fines.

Ashfield District Council launched a clampdown to remove the blight of fly-tipping in residential streets across the district.

During ten days of action, five fixed penalty notices were issued after furniture, duvets, fridges and general rubbish were among the waste abandoned on roads.

One incident came in Cosgrove Avenue, Sutton-in-ashfield, following a “high number” of reports that rubbish was being dumped on land.

Garden furniture, duvets, cardboard and garden waste were found at the scene following investigations by council officers.

Documentation led to a man who was responsible being fined, with the fee paid straight away following an apology.

Another incident of a fridge freezer being dumped in Bannerman Road, Kirkby-in-ashfield, led to a fine, as well as a fine for rubbish in St Mary’s Way, Hucknall.

The Hucknall incident came when a resident dumped rubbish on public land expecting the council to remove it.

A further incident in Stone Church View, Annesley, also resulted in a fine - again following “regular reports” of fly-tipping.

Council officers investigated the area and reviewed CCTV to catch the culprit red-handed fly-tipping in a “hotspot” location.

And a dumped sofa in St Michaels Street, Sutton-in-ashfield, led to door-to-door investigations by council officials who eventually had a man admit responsibility.

He was fined £400. Theresa Hodgkinson is the director of place and communities at Ashfield District Council.

She said: “This last week has been an excellent example of how the council is tackling environmental crime.

“Fly-tipping is a serious offence and carries a maximum penalty of an unlimited fine or up to five years imprisonment.

“The council is committed to driving down fly-tipping and rubbish dumping, which is a blight on our communities.

“If you have large waste that you need to dispose of we offer a bulky waste collection service for a small charge.

“If you choose to use a waste carrier then it is your responsibility to ensure that they have the correct license for waste disposal. If they flytip your waste, you are accountable.”
