Neighbours say they’d welcome new apartments

PLAN WOULD MEAN BUILDING ON OLD INDUSTRIAL SITE

- By PETER HENNESSY

NEIGHBOURS have welcomed plans to build apartments on the site of an old industrial building on a city street.

The currently disused building at 114 Raleigh Street in The Arboretum – opposite the grade Ii-listed All Saints’ Church – would be demolished to make way for 16 new apartments with 10 car parking spaces if the plan gets permission.

People who live in the area say they can see why more people would want to live in the area and that the building is a good site for a housing development.

Joe Hanes, 48, who lives in Arboretum, said: “I can’t say it surprises me – there’s a lot of that sort of housing around here.

“But looking at it now, why not? It’s certainly better than it just sitting there not being used.

“If you can build some more houses for people to use then I say go for it.

“We have permit parking in most places around here, so that doesn’t really worry me.

“I think it’s a good idea.” Megan Huddy, 20, who lives on Raleigh Street, said: “I think it would be good for the area, definitely.

“There’s a lot of students around here, although we have neighbours who aren’t students as well. It’s a great place to live – we love it here.”

Another neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “I can understand why they are doing it.

“This is an area where you get a lot of that sort of housing – HMOS, apartments, ideal for students and young working people.

“As long as it doesn’t create problems, I haven’t got a problem with it.

“We have had issues with noise around here.

“But there’s a need for more housing and I can see why they’re planning to build there.”

The development would comprise six two-bed, nine one-bed apartments and one two-storey, four-bed duplex.

Applicant NIE states: “The proposed development at 114 Raleigh Street site is for a 16 high quality apartments building.

“The site is ideal for this use, since it is set within a secure community with facilities and public transport close by.

“The building will sit within a pleasing environment with new vehicle and pedestrian accesses. The site has its own car parking, cycle and bin stores.

“All internal and external floor levels are carefully designed according to the existing building levels.”

The application will now be considered by Nottingham City Council’s planning committee.
