My memories of this magnificent store

-

HAVING read the Post article (“Sad end to century of trading in store”, Post, May 5) on the “sad end to Debenhams” and visiting the store a final time on Sunday, I fully concur with many of the comments and sadness at the loss of an iconic retailer.

I made my visit for pure nostalgia and for one last look around. The first thing I noticed on entering the main doors was that the infamous knock-out perfume scent (from arguably one of the best cosmetics departments in the Midlands) was no more. No glamour here, just empty counters stood awaiting collection.

However with a glance to the rear of the department, a warmer comfort could be seen: the old huge wooden staircase. Still grand, it beckoned for one last ascent, so off I climbed!

Yes, this store has always been a bit higgledy-piggledy but to me that’s part of its charm and shopping mystery! With many floors and its huge 200,000 sq foot of space, it was one of, if not the, largest stores in the Midlands. You could certainly get lost!

Many of the floors were now just empty, lonely shells – no bustling shoppers and not a fashionista in sight.

But a jewel was to be found on the fifth floor in the shape of the Debenhams restaurant. Alone, I ventured in for one last look.

Anyone who has visited this restaurant cannot have failed to have been wowed by one of the best eating views in Nottingham and possibly the Midlands.

Stunning views across the square, the Council House and far beyond. On Sunday the Nottingham skyline “popped” against blue skies and bright sunshine. Out the windows below, as usual I saw people crossing the square like ants. I can’t recollect a view like this in our region and whilst it’s sad it will close, it dawned on me what an amazing proposition it could make for the new owners. Forget flats in this part of the building. A luxury moon bar and restaurant would be something super special that Nottingham needs and exciting experiences are what people want.

So please new owners take note: the queen of the Midlands needs a few more jewels in her crown and here’s one that with a little polish will sparkle again and make you money!

Thank you to present. all staff past and
