NEIGHBOURS in a “really quiet street” in Sneinton say it was “terrifying” and “crazy” that a man was stabbed in broad daylight.

Officers were called to St Stephen’s Road in Sneinton at around 1pm on Friday after a man was reported to have been stabbed in the back.

A cordon was set up and searches carried out before a 19-year-old man was arrested in nearby Newark Avenue on suspicion of grievous bodily harm.

The force said a knife has also been recovered following a search, and the incident is believed to be isolated and of no threat to the public.

Residents living near the scene of the stabbing reacted with concern after witnessing the large police presence before the arrest was made.

Kimberly Scholar, 29, said: “It’s just so terrifying that something like that can happen where you live.

“We have always felt safe here in seven years of living here.

“It’s crazy that something like that could just happen out of the blue.”

A man in his 20s, who did not wish to be named, said he witnessed much of the aftermath of the incident.

He said: “It was quite crazy, I heard yelling, and came out to look and there were lots of people around. The police were here in minutes.

“The cordon covered most of the road, but I went out and by the time I came home it was gone, and I think police had made an arrest by then.

“I feel pretty safe here though. If it was a random attack that would make it more concerning, but from the police, it doesn’t sound that way.”

There was a short period of time after the incident was first reported that officers were searching for a suspect in the area.

A female student, who didn’t wish to be named, said: “It was scary to experience it right on your doorstep, I heard noises and thought someone had been hit by a car,” she said.

“The police were close to our home, and the tape was up and down the road.

“When they said they hadn’t caught anyone yet, we didn’t want to go out. You hear about these incidents happening but it’s more real when it’s near where you live.

“I read about the victim not having life-threatening injuries, so that’s good.

“But to happen in daylight, and parents then came to pick their children up from the nearby school with all this police presence - just wasn’t nice.”

Other residents described the street as “really quiet” and that it was “ridiculous that this should happen here or anywhere”.

For one neighbour, incidents involving knives such as this one “don’t come as a shock anymore”.

Detective Inspector Kayne Rukas, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “This is a shockingly violent attack that happened in broad daylight but residents can be reassured that this is an isolated incident with no risk to the wider public.

“Patrols have been upped in Sneinton in order to provide reassurance and anyone with any concerns is encouraged to speak with officers on patrol or call 101.

“Officers did an excellent job to quickly arrive at the scene, secure the area and conduct searches in order to locate and arrest a suspect.

“The victim is not believed to have life-threatening injuries.

“I am now appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time who may have witnessed the incident to get in touch as soon as possible.

“Any information you have, no matter how insignificant you may think it is, could go some way to help us solve who did this.” Anyone with any information should contact police on 101 quoting incident number 320 of May 7.

It’s crazy that something like that could just happen out of the blue.
