AN investigation into what caused a huge industrial blaze could begin today.

Firefighters remained at the scene, in Harrimans Lane, Dunkirk, over the weekend as they continued to tackle “hotspots” in a scrap pile.

In an update on the situation on Saturday, a spokesman for Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said there were “six or seven hotspots still being damped down”.

“We won’t be able to determine a cause until the fire is completely out, possibly by Monday,” the spokesman added.

“There is currently one appliance on-site, and crews will be in attendance.

“The same advice is being issued to residents and businesses nearby.

“We are there to monitor the situation as some hotspots are still popping up.”

Police, ambulance and fire crews were called out on Thursday afternoon to the fire, with nearly 100 firefighters attending at the peak.

Large plumes of smoke could be seen for miles across Nottinghamshire, with the fumes from a scrap pile still rising on Friday morning.

Damien West, area manager for Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, said firefighters were faced with a “rapidly developing fire” but that there had been no reported injuries.

Speaking on Friday morning, incident commander and group manager, Phil Revil, said: “Crews have been tirelessly working through the night to extinguish the fire and control the spread.

“We’ve currently six appliances working with the on-site owners to separate the pile and extinguish it.

“At this moment in time we’ve got no idea what caused the fire.

“The site was working when the fire was observed, there’s nothing to suggest it was malicious but we will be working today with our fire investigation team to try and identify the exact cause.”
