Boldewijn has the backing of us all, says boss

-

IAN Burchnall says everybody at Notts County has given Enzio Boldewijn their full support as he ended a horrible week with a stunning goal against Barnet.

The winger was the subject of a racial slur made by Maurice Ross during last weekend’s game against Altrincham, prompting the Robins’ assistant head coach to resign on Monday.

Confirming his comments in an interview with BBC Scotland, Ross said: “The exact words I said were, ‘He looks like he’s moving like a 40-year-old. What age is he actually? Does he have a doctored African passport?’”

The remarks were made in front of Notts’ substitutes who then told the winger what had been said after the game.

Several Notts players then went straight to chief executive Jason Turner prior to training on Monday morning to complain as the squad united behind the Dutchman.

Ross has since apologised publicly to the winger for the remark, but the Football Association is now investigating.

And Notts head coach Burchnall said the former Crawley Town winger had everybody’s backing at Meadow Lane after watching him score a sensational 20-yard strike in the 4-1 win over Barnet.

“We talked around the time and on the phone,” he said.

“We’ve had that dialogue. Everybody has been behind him and supported him.

“The boy wants to play football. I was really pleased he could come off the bench and he scored a great goal.

“He was so happy to get on the pitch, score a goal and then he is smiling in the dressing room.

“That’s what any footballer wants to concentrate on.”
