A PUB landlady was assaulted with a pint glass in a disputre with a bar tab, a court heard.

Patrick Doherty, of Manor Lane, Shelford, a regular at The White Swan pub, Newark, pleaded guilty to assaulting the landlady when he appeared before Nottingham Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

The landlady was off-duty and had been out socially with friends when she returned to the North Gate pub where father-of-five Doherty was drinking with family.

She was approached later in the evening by a member of the bar staff about an issue with the bar bill 38-year-old Doherty had run up.

Rob Keeble, in mitigation, told the court the landlady came out with the card payment machine.

“Clearly there is a discussion at that period in time,” explained Mr Keeble.

“She took the glasses from the table and removed them and put them on the bar.”

Doherty picked up his pint glass from the bar.

He was holding it up as the landlady grabbed at his arm to get it back from him.

She said this tipped the glass and the contents fell out.

The assault was in the context of him holding the pint pot up and her grabbing it to spill the beer, the court heard. It was one blow to the top of her head.

“He taps her on the head with the pint pot,” added Mr Keeble. “It is almost comical; she is grabbing his hand with the pint pot above his head.”

The landlady later told police she had never had a problem with Doherty before.

Doherty is genuinely remorseful, ashamed and embarrassed, and was a hard-working family man with his own building business, employing five people, the court heard.

Magistrate Kim Geering fined Doherty £262, and ordered he pay £50 compensation to the landlady, a victim surcharge of £32 and costs of £85.
