Worrall, Mighten claim top awards

-

DEFENDER Joe Worrall believes next season is a chance for Nottingham Forest to “achieve something special”.

The 24-year-old centre-back’s performances have been one of the positives in an otherwise disappointing campaign for the Reds.

They earned him two player of the year awards as the season came to a close on Saturday with a 2-1 defeat at home to Preston North End.

After being voted the supporters’ club player of the year and Gedling branch player of the year, Worrall tweeted: “Extremely honoured to pick up these awards, I would like to thank everybody for your support this season.

“This season, off the back of the last, has been disappointing and way below par from us all. Next season is a chance to try and achieve something special. Thank you!”

Worrall has spent a chunk of the campaign sidelined through injury but still made 33 appearances.

He told the club website: “Growing up watching Forest and being able to play for the club is a dream come true so to be recognised on a personal level means a lot.

“I’ve been unlucky with the two injuries but coming back into the side and being captain on numerous occasions has been an honour and I’ve always played each game as though it’s my last.”

Fellow Nigel Doughty Academy product Alex Mighten picked up the David Howard trophy for young player of the year.

The 19-year-old winger made 27 appearances this season and scored three goals - netting his first goal for the club at Millwall in December.

Mighten posted on social media: “Extremely grateful to receive this award. Thank you to all of the fans that voted. See you next season.

“It’s a huge honour to be voted for this award. From coming through the academy to getting to the point I’m at now, it’s been a really enjoyable season on a personal level.

“I’ve been really grateful to have the chance to play more minutes and gain confidence as a player.

“We’ve got a lot of work to do next season both individually and as a team.

“We know where we want to end up next season and we’ll get there step by step.

“We just want to keep progressing and, hopefully, the fans will be back to help us with that.”
