COUNCIL officials say there are no plans for special screenings of this summer’s Euro football championship.

The tournament gets under way on June 11 and will run for a month.

For the World Cup in 2018, Nottingham City Council, in partnership with Art of Football, organised a 27-square-metre screen to broadcast England’s quarter-final win over Sweden from the grounds of the Castle.

Around 3,000 fans watched the 2-0 victory there.

The 2-1 semi-final defeat to Croatia was also screened at the Castle.

However, for UEFA Euro 2020, which has been rearranged to this summer, a city council spokesman confirmed that there are “no current plans for any football screenings” during the tournament.

The Castle has been undergoing a £30m revamp and will re-open on June 21.

Art of Football also organised a fanzone for the 2018 World Cup at Sneinton Market with street food, live music and pop-up bars.

Managing director Luke Cuthbert said there were no plans for any screenings because “it’s too much of a gamble” with the end of lockdown.

“We are not going to do any match screenings,” he said.

“However, we might hold fanrelated events like a pre-match barbeque, have it down at Sneinton Market.

“People can talk football, have some food and then head off to wherever they are going to watch the match.”

But he added: “If England get to the final we might have to do something.”

England football manager Gareth Southgate will name his squad on May 25.

England’s first game at the Euros is against Croatia at Wembley on June 13 followed by Scotland and Czech Republic.
