Models shop to be turned into more student accommodation

- By JAMIE BARLOW

PROPOSALS to redevelop the site of a former toy models shop into student flats have been given the green light.

Gee Dee Models, on the corner of Heathcoat Street and High Cross Street, closed after a search for a new owner was unsuccessful.

The site has now been vacant for a few years and approval has been granted for a new student flats complex with 74 beds and a coffee shop at ground floor level.

Some people walking through Hockley were in favour while others were more sceptical.

Andrew Adey, 34, a learning support worker, recalled trips as a child when his parents took him to buy Airfix planes from Gee Dee Models.

He added: “There’s quite a lot [of student accommodation], I know it’s a money-maker for them.

“There’s ample amount of accommodation because look what they are building next to Victoria Bus Station - it’s just massive.”

He was against another cafe but said he knew it would create jobs.

“It’s not going to survive,” said Mr Adey, who lives in Mansfield.

The plans were approved by the city council subject to certain conditions.

Housekeeper Glenys Lane said she was in support of the plans.

“There seems a lot at the minute, it’s going up all over,” said the 64-year-old of Kelling Close, Bestwood Park.

“They probably need it. It brings people to the city, it’s good.”

Simon Gilby, 63, a retired NHS worker of Mapperley, added: “I think it’s important we have accommodation for all the students in Nottingham.

“The key criteria for me would be building sensitivity, it’s this environment and the history of this part of Nottingham.

“As long as they design the buildings sympathetically I would be happy with that.”

A 56-year-old woman, who lives in Hockley but didnt wish to be named, said: “Hockley is about cafe culture and bar culture. I do love living here. I think they could have thought of something better if I am honest.”

She would have liked to have seen “something creative” and “something in keeping” with the Creative Quarter.

She added: “They are going to charge a hell of a lot for that, for rent, because of where it is.”

The site comprises the former Grains building and includes the former model shop with storage / offices above fronting Heathcoat Street.

The property was originally used for the manufacture of sewing machines.

The new building is proposed to be built over six levels.

In a consultation, concerns were raised over the potential for rubbish to be dumped on roads, and the impact from the construction phase.

The applicant is listed in a council document as Burt Bros Hosiery Ltd.
