‘Goose Fair would just have been a germs fest’

-

SUPPORT for the city council’s decision to cancel this year’s Goose Fair has come from people living around the Forest Recreation Ground.

The fair has been axed for the second year running due to public safety concerns and high Covid infection rates.

Nottingham City Council “reluctantly” came to the decision to cancel the fair that usually takes place in October.

Holly Parker, 35, agreed with the decision as going ahead with the fair could cause an increase in the number of people being “pinged” by the NHS app.

She said: “I can understand the reason why.

“I went to a festival and got pinged to isolate so I’m a bit put off group gatherings.

“It’s more about having to isolate after.”

Another resident, Nab Nahal, 45, agreed with Holly and stressed how children’s education could be affected.

She said: “Considering kids haven’t had the vaccination, it’ll just be a germs fest.

“It could affect autumn school time. I don’t think it’s a bad idea. It’s a very sensible one.

“It would be irresponsible if it went ahead.”

Paulene Brown, 60, another resident of Forest Fields, said: “It needs to be cancelled.

“It’s too much. I wasn’t planning on going but I think it’s a good decision.”

Facebook commenters have largely disagreed with the decision, however, calling for it to be changed.

Nottinghamshire Live reader Michael Pearce wrote: “I have to say I am somewhat disappointed in the decision as Covid is here to stay and I guess the same will happen next year unless we realise what we as a nation should do.

“I live in the city centre and you would not think we have, and are going through, a pandemic.

“No masks, no social distancing, so why should the Goose Fair bear the brunt of ignorance?”

Another reader added: “So thousands of people can gather for a football match or music concert but for ‘Covid safety reasons’ Goose Fair is cancelled! Utter joke!”
