Stars backing community fundraiser

-

THE countdown has begun for a community event raising money to help young people in Nottingham.

The event will feature appearances from boxing figures John Fury and WBA World Featherweight Champion Leigh Wood.

It has been organised by Nottingham-based youth charity Switch Up, which focuses on improving the lives of young people by providing mental health and employment support.

The charity has joined forces with Team Fury, the team behind heavyweight star Tyson Fury, to host a 5k fun run around the Regatta Lake at Holme Pierrepoint on Sunday.

Marcellus Baz BEM, founder and chief executive of Switch Up and Nottingham School of Boxing, said: “”We are delighted to be bringing this groundbreaking event to the people of Nottingham, which aims to showcase Switch Up’s life-changing mental health support.

“The event has also garnered local celebrity support from Vicky Mcclure and Torvill and Dean.

“As well as the 5km fun run, the day will feature sparring contests, music and refreshments, as well as speakers on stage talking about the importance of providing mental health support and resources for the youth in the Nottingham community.”

Marcellus explained how after lockdown, young people have struggled to find help.

“People have been on waiting lists for ages and are really struggling. Coming out of lockdown has been really difficult. The reason we are doing this is to raise awareness and funds for immediate support for families. The money will go straight into counselling, mentoring and wellbeing programmes.”
