Glimpses of best but more to come: Ian

-

IAN Burchnall says Notts County showed glimpses of their “top-level” but said he was not getting carried away by their demolition of Barnet.

The Magpies produced a scintillating second-half display to secure a 5-0 win on the opening day of the season.

Two goals from Ruben Rodrigues put Notts on their way to a crushing victory as Callum Roberts’ penalty and further strikes from Kyle Wootton and Jim O’brien took care of the rest.

More than 1,000 away fans descended on the Hive to watch Notts produce a terrific display to catch the eye of their National League rivals – and Burchnall said his side can still get better.

“It’s massive to get that first three points and the clean sheet too,” he said.

“All of those things are great, but we won’t get carried away.

“I know it’s really cliched and a bit boring, but it’s one game.

“We have a lot of work to do. We can show at times what our top level is.

“The move which led to the third goal and the sequence of passing was just fantastic.

“We know what our top level is, but we’ve got to work hard every day to get there.

“Now we just focus on the Bank Holiday weekend.”

The crushing victory over Barnet was Notts’ biggest away since they thrashed Darlington in League Two in 2010 - the season the Magpies were crowned champions.

And Burchnall says his side have plenty of firepower in the locker as they aim to challenge for promotion to the EFL.

“We’ve got goals in this team as we’ve said before,” he said.

“We’ve still got Eli Sam, Aaron Nemane and Kairo Mitchell sat on the bench and they are hungry to come in which is a brilliant position to be in.

“But I thought Kyle (Wootton) was excellent and I was really happy that he scored his goal.

“The other boys are going to create a lot through the season, but what I was really pleased about was that we were very secure behind the ball.

“They countered once or twice, but Richard Brindley, Kyle Cameron and Connell Rawlinson and Ed Francis controlled the middle of the pitch really well.

“That’s been a weak point for us.”

Notts will aim to build on that performance in what looks a demanding weekend. They are at home to Torquay United on Saturday followed by a trip to face big-spending Wrexham on Bank Holiday Monday.
