Police find drugs worth £150,000 on a break-in call

-

CANNABIS with a street value of around £150,000 was found in a basement after police were called to a report of a break-in.

Officers found the plants after entering the property in Alfreton Road, Radford, through an open door just after 11pm on Wednesday.

They discovered 30 plants in the basement, and a further 15 in a separate room, along with evidence that plants had previously been cropped.

The electricity supply had also been bypassed. Investigations are on-going. The plants have now been destroyed.

Radford Neighbourhood Police Inspector Paul Ferguson said: “I am pleased that this report has led to a large amount of cannabis being taken out of circulation.

“Some people may think that cannabis growing is a victimless crime but, quite frankly, they’re wrong.

“The production and distribution of drugs has a detrimental impact on communities and ruins lives.

“It can also often be linked to more serious organised crime and violence.

“This discovery has taken the drugs out of the hands of criminals who would have profited from their sale. It also prevents and disrupts subsequent criminal activity related to drug dealing networks.

“Not only is cannabis growing illegal but it can also be extremely dangerous due to the fire risk where electricity has been bypassed, especially if people are living in adjoining homes.

“We will continue to target offenders who blight our communities with drugs and are carrying out extensive enquiries in order to track down who is behind this incident.

“Information from the public is vital in helping us crack down on drug crime and I’d urge anyone with any information about suspected drug-related activity in their community to get in touch with us.“

Anyone who can help is asked to report them to Nottinghamshire Police on 101. Alternatively, they can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
