Drone helped detect cannabis

POLICE discovered 69 cannabis plants worth an average of £1,000 each during a raid in Nottingham.

Officers searched a property in Thurgarton Avenue in Sneinton, near Bentinck Court, and found the drugs growing in three areas of the house.

A specialist police drone was flown over and a heat gun used to detect the plants during the operation.

Officers say it is the latest example of how they listened to residents in a bid to tackle drug crime.

They did not say if anyone has been arrested following the raid.

But previous action has resulted in a number of recent arrests and seizures of weapons and drugs thanks to local community intelligence being passed on.

As part of this ongoing activity, in May, officers executed warrants in Bentinck Court responding to feedback about drugs supply.

It led to three properties being raided across the city, five people being arrested and a large quantity of mamba being recovered.

Police Constable Kirsty Mason, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “As our positive warrant activity on Friday clearly demonstrates, we take reports of drug crime and antisocial behaviour very seriously and work closely with the local community to make sure we are tackling those issues that matter most to them.

“The message to those who want to deal drugs is clear – we will not tolerate this behaviour, we will take action and offenders will be caught and brought to justice.”

■ Meanwhile, in the north of the county, more than 100 cannabis plants have been found at a house by police following reports of possible drugs production.

Officers arrived at an address in Gladstone Street, Worksop, where they discovered the set-up at a two-bed terraced house.

Police found 114 plants growing in two bedrooms of the property and in the loft.

The electricity had also been bypassed. No-one was found inside.

Anyone with information should call 101, quoting incident number 545 of September 7, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
