Pub revamp on hold after licensee quits

PLANS to revamp a Nottinghamshire pub that has been closed for nearly two years are on hold after the new licensee quit.

The Manvers Arms, in Radcliffeon-trent, was to have a major makeover to breathe new life into the rundown property and turn it into a booming community pub following its closure in December 2019.

The refurbishment included a facelift both outside - where the signs have fallen off - with a new alfresco dining area and inside, with improvements to each of the three bars, a new kitchen and better toilets.

Reopening had been planned for the autumn.

However, the woman at the helm has now pulled out. She declined to comment to the Post but posted on the pub’s Facebook page: “Unfortunately, after much cost and many months of talks with the landlords of The Manvers Arms I have been unable to reach an agreement and have therefore withdrawn from the project.

“It is a huge disappointment to me as being Radcliffe-on-trent bornand-bred I see the potential of The Manvers Arms and believe it deserves to be returned to its former glory and regain its position as the first-choice hospitality venue in Radcliffe-on-trent.

“I would like to thank everyone for their goodwill, support and co-operation with this initiative - it’s been fantastic.”

Locals are disappointed by the news. Resident Helen Breese said: “It’s a real shame. It’s becoming an eyesore on the main road into the village. We’d love to have a family pub with a good beer garden back at this end of Radcliffe.”

The pub is owned by Star Pubs & Bars.

A spokesperson said there had been people “very interested” in taking the pub but couldn’t comment on the operator quitting.

They added: “Subject to recruiting new operators, Star Pubs & Bars is planning a major refurbishment of The Manvers Arms. The revamp will redecorate the outside of the pub and create a fantastic covered alfresco eating and drinking space in the large garden.

“In order to cater for all occasions, and appeal to local residents as well as those from further afield, the pub will have a lounge with a dining area, a cosy snug and a room dedicated to sports and classic pub games such as pool and darts. The kitchen will be upgraded as part of the project.

“The Manvers Arms is a landmark pub in a very prominent position in Radcliffe-on-trent. With new homes under construction and planned in the vicinity, it is an excellent opportunity for anyone looking to lease a pub.

“There is high demand for great pubs with big gardens in villages surrounding Nottingham.”
