The largest crowd ever for a boxing match - 120,757 - gathered to watch Gene Tunney and Jack Dempsey’s heavyweight clash at the Sesquicentennial Stadium in Philadelphia.
1986:
Liverpool thrashed Fulham 10-0 in their League Cup second round first-leg match.
2008:
A Football Association arbitration hearing ruled in favour of Sheffield United in their claim for compensation from West Ham United over the Carlos Tevez affair.
2009:
Former Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur defender Sol Campbell left Notts County by mutual consent having played just one first team game for the League Two club.
2010:
Boxer Ricky Hatton’s licence was withdrawn by the British Boxing Board of Control after they laid charges of “bringing boxing into disrepute arising out of incidents of alcohol and drug abuse by him which had been reported widely across the media”. Hatton, who won world titles at light welterweight and welterweight, lost his comeback fight to Vyacheslav Senchenko in 2012 and subsequently announced his retirement from boxing.

Uncapped trio Gary Ballance, Ben Stokes and Boyd Rankin were named in England’s 17-man squad for the Ashes series in Australia.

Noel King was appointed as the Republic of Ireland’s interim senior manager following the departure of Giovanni Trapattoni. Martin O’neill replaced King in November.
