RESIDENTS and traders in Arnold have voiced their excitement over the town’s market revamp - but said the works are taking “too long”.

People in the area have praised the progress made on the Arnold Market Place Redevelopment in the heart of the town.

However, they also said they would like for the project in Market Place to be completed more quickly.

The building is expected to be finished by next spring after work started this spring.

Retiree Janet Dean, who has lived in Arnold since 1965, said: “It is great and we are all looking forward to it. But I just think it takes so long.

“I also think that the focus should be on attracting more businesses to the area - there are a lot of empty shops at the moment.”

The 78-year-old added: “Once it is done I am sure we will all enjoy it.

“Arnold has changed a lot over the years in both good and bad ways.

“But I wouldn’t see myself anywhere else.”

The redeveloped market aims to create a more vibrant economy and revitalise the town centre.

An advert from Gedling Borough Council reads: “The new building and market place will support local business start-ups and create a new shopping experience for the town.”

Nelia Pestana, 49, owner of Refresh Cafe, in Market Place said: “When the works started on the site, I saw customers start to leave the cafe as well.

“Sometimes it is completely empty - that has never happened before.

“I really hope that the new market will bring more customers into town - but it is just taking too long.

“The street has become a ghost place.”

Another resident has echoed everyone’s comments about the project’s timeline.

Retired Peter Bonser, of Arnold, 77, added: “I think it will be a great addition to the area - if it is ever completed.”

Mr Bonson, who has lived in the area since 1980, said: “I come here pretty much every day and it needed something for sure.

“I just do not understand why it is taking so long.”
