Happy with their new homes, but some are fearful

COUNCIL TENANTS ON LIFE IN AREA SCARRED BY VIOLENCE

RESIDENTS who were the first to move into new council houses are happy with their new homes – but a spate of violent incidents have made some fearful for the future.

Last year, residents moved into the Nottingham City Homes proeprties in Ainsworth Drive, The Meadows.

The development is on the site of the former Clifton Miners’ Welfare and consists of two-bed homes with a drives and rear gardens which the residents really like.

However, some have voiced their concern over safety in the area, which has seen several serious incidents recently.

Chanelle Edwards, 27, said that if she could pick up her house and move it to another area, she would.

“All of the stabbings have put me off,” she said. “I’m concerned for my son growing up in the area – I would like to move in a few years.

“The neighbours are friendly. The house is nice. If I could pick up the house and move it, that would be great.”

Awad Adam and his family moved into the property last year and enjoy living there.

Mr Adam, 55, who works in security, said: “The house is a new build and we are the first family to live in this home.

“We like the house and the area – we haven’t had any problems.

“All the neighbours have children similar to our child’s age – they are friendly and respectful.

“The area near us, the police cars do park, but that’s separate from this area.”

Shaun Harry, 35, who is selfemployed, said: “The area is not too bad, it has got a reputation. It’s quiet around here. We just keep ourselves to ourselves.

“I enjoy living here, there’s nothing wrong here – it’s a decent-size property and a decent-size garden.”

The comments came soon after an 11th person was charged with murder in connection with a fatal stabbing on the estate.

Michael Anton O’connor was found with knife wounds in Wilford Crescent West, in The Meadows, just before 10.30pm on Wednesday, November 10.

Benjamin Taylor, 37, of Monton Road, Eccles, Manchester, was the 11th person to be charged with murder in connection with the investigation.

He was remanded in police custody and was due to appear at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

Ten other people have previously been charged with murder over the death.

They include Leonard Ward, 41, of Marwood Road, Carlton; Joseph Boscombe, 39, of Rostherne Avenue, Manchester; Joshua Agboola, 28, of Leven Grove, Darwen, Blackburn, and Carla Mcguire, 51, of Wilford Crescent West, The Meadows.

Also charged are Michael Mingoes, 19, of Powell Street, Manchester; Jerome Sheard, 29, of Wilford Crescent West, The Meadows; Rebecca Bell, 36, of Loughrigg Close, The Meadows; Paula Usherwood, 37, of Central Avenue, Beeston; Michael Mcguire, 34, of Wilford Crescent West, The Meadows; and Curtis Sheard, 23, of Wilford Crescent West, The Meadows.
