A RESIDENT with dementia was “mocked” by a staff member and another sat at the dining table with “faeces under their fingernails” at a Nottingham care home, a shocking report reveals.

Beechdale Manor Care Home, in Beechdale Road, Bilborough, is judged to be “inadequate” by regulator the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in a new report.

In an inspection on October 20, an agency staff member was seen mocking a resident who had dementia.

The report reads: “The other staff present did not challenge this practice. We reported this to the provider who dealt with this after the inspection.”

It added that staff “wilfully ignored” people’s requests for help and that on one occasion inspectors themselves “intervened to meet the person’s needs”.

Detailing a “degrading” moment for one resident, the inspectors stated: “They were sat at the dining table with faeces under their fingernails.

“Staff did not notice or offer assistance with regard to ensuring the person was clean before supporting the person to the dining room”

The CQC carried out an inspection into Beechdale Home’s leadership and safety standards – finding them both “inadequate”.

It marks a significant step down from the previous report in October 2020, which rated the home as “good”.

Medicine management was also criticised in the report, which revealed that one person with a long-term chronic health condition had missed essential medication for five consecutive days.

Inspectors were also “not assured” the home met Covid regulations and claimed there was “insufficient leadership”.

They said: “Systems and processes were either not in place or not robust enough to maintain effective managerial oversight of the service. The provider told us that they would normally have regular oversight of the service.

“This had not happened because of Covid-19 and other factors.”

A spokesperson for the home said: “A new manager has been appointed since this inspection and has already made a significant improvement to the service.

“The home continues to work closely with all parties in driving through the changes required.”
