RESIDENTS WELCOME PLANS TO DEMOLISH ‘EYESORE’ TO CREATE PARKING SPACES
PEOPLE in Bilborough have spoken of their relief after plans were given the go-ahead to demolish “eyesore” garages.
The nine garages off Glaisdale Drive, which were said to have had issues with anti-social behaviour, will be replaced by parking spaces for Nottingham City Homes residents.
The garage site is one of eight that have been approved to be converted into parking across the city by Nottingham City Council.
Joy Witts, 59, who lives off Glaisdale Drive, said she was “glad” the garages were being replaced. “They’re an eyesore,” she said.
“All you see is weeds. It’s long awaited. People all fight to get in the parking spots and double-park around here even though there’s a permit [scheme].”
Jackie Watson, an 82-year-old former caterer, added: “I’m glad of the changes because you’re taking life into your own hands pulling out of our drive.
“People park where they like even though there’s a parking permit. We’ve been told to go away by drivers. They’re very rude.”
A former owner of one of the garages, Donna Colquhoun, said: “We haven’t got a driveway so we’re glad there will be extra space.
“We’ve always thought a patch of useless grass next to us could be converted into parking.”
Barry Harvey, 36, was also happy to see the change.
“I’m happy the garages are going and we’re getting new parking because you get rude drivers round here who don’t know what they’re doing and park where they like,” he said.
“Double yellow lines, on corners. Some have smashed signs and fences. I’ve had to repair a road sign outside my house myself. It was facing the wrong way.
“Some have shouted at me and my neighbours for parking in their permit spots.”
A Nottingham City Homes spokesperson said: “We’ve found that older garages attract anti-social behaviour and they’re not fit for purpose as modern cars don’t fit in them.
“So after speaking to residents, they have told us what they need more than anything is car parking.”
