Car windscreen smashed by stones thrown from bridge

YOUNG people were warned they could have caused a serious accident when stones were thrown at cars from a bridge in Nottinghamshire.
Residents in Bestwood Village have voiced their frustration over the incident in Moor Road, which led to a car windscreen being smashed.
But they say there are more widespread issues in the area, with one regular walker saying the behaviour of some individuals is very intimidating.
Mick Craven, who is
80 and from Arnold, said: “There’s all sorts of vandalism around here.
“There’s a wooden bridge down here, they set fire to that.
“Around the same area they pull fences down on a regular basis.
“I’m afraid of teenagers and youngsters these days - I just put it down to the families to be honest. There’s no discipline, no respect.”
Meesha Handley, 32, a mother of two from the village, said: “I’ve been here for nearly three years - I’ve never seen anyone do that or heard of any incidents. Obviously it’s terrible.
“Parents don’t know what their kids are doing when they are out.
“They won’t believe that they would do that kind of thing.
“I don’t think it’s a normal thing for children to go and play on the streets now anyway - I think it’s quite dangerous.
“When I was younger it was the normal thing to do - but I don’t think it should be allowed if you don’t know what your kids are doing.”
Another resident, who wished to be anonymous, said parents need to be having the right conversations with their children.
“It’s relatively quiet here - no problems,” she said. “It’s dangerous for drivers because smashing a windscreen is one thing - but if they would have lost control of the car, it could have caused a big accident.
“I think it’s difficult because if you look at how police resources are already stretched - where does this fall on the priority list?
“I think it’s probably more parents having the right conversations with their kids around making sure they’re doing the right things.
“At the end of the day, it’s going to be difficult to police this certain sort of stuff because teenagers will be teenagers.”
Nottinghamshire Police confirmed officers were called to Moor Road in Bestwood Village at 3.30pm on Sunday, January 2, when a car was struck by an object thrown from a pedestrian footbridge.
A spokesperson said: “This was reckless act that could have had more serious consequences for everyone involved.
“We will never tolerate this kind of behaviour and ask anyone who witnessed this incident to come forward by calling 101 and quoting incident 344 of 3 January 2022.”
