PLANS to expand a hair salon and the successful opening of a new chippy are helping to breathe new life into Woodthorpe’s retail offering.

An application has been submitted to Gedling Borough Council to expand W&CO. Hair at 4 Wensley Road, which would see the use of two first floor bedrooms change from residential to hair and beauty.

No-one has lived in the flats above the salon since October last year, according to planning documents.

The family owned unisex salon currently has two stylists who are sisters.

Its proposed expansion comes after Nottingham’s first chip shop to accommodate fish eaters and vegans alike opened in August on Mansfield Road in Woodthorpe.

Sea & Earth Fish & Chips has gone down well with those who have tried the new chippy.

But despite further business ventures such as the salon extending, locals are divided if it would attract them to shop more in Woodthorpe, although they are pleased to see businesses doing well there.

Antony Dixon, 55, who lives in Woodthorpe, said: “It’s definitely a good thing as there’s not a lot here in the vicinity.

“I’ve used the nearby chip shop, but it’s a bit barren around here.”

Peter Mccormack, 36, who lives in Arnold, said: “It can’t be a bad thing, they’re changing all the time and more power to them.”

Howard Whitehurst, who is retired and lives in Arnold, said: “I come to the model shop here on Mansfield Road but I’ve no other reason to come here.

“All the shops around here are what you’d call destination shops, you wouldn’t go up here to browse anything and nothing else appeals to me; I’m not crazy about takeaways.”

Catherine, 62, who lives in Sherwood and was walking her dog, said: “It’s a good thing they’re opening, but I just come around here to walk the dog.

“The chip shop is very good, but I don’t think more shops would attract me to here as there’s enough in Sherwood, I wouldn’t need to come here.”
