A COMMUNITY is in mourning after the death of a 75-year-old man who was reportedly attacked in the street.

Police are investigating reports that Neil Robinson was assaulted in Ranson Road, Chilwell, at around 12.20pm on December 16.

He was taken to the Queen’s Medical Centre and died six days later.

Residents described the news as “devastating”.

Julie Moon, 38, said: “It is just very sad to hear – what a tragedy.

“Especially because it happened close to Christmas Day.”

She added: “It must be hard for the family right now.

“It is also very unusual for a place like Chilwell.”

Two friends taking their dogs for a walk were also saddened by the news.

Buyer Sue Gott said: “I do not understand how such a tragedy could happen here.

“It is very peaceful and quiet nothing bad ever happens here.”

The 53-year-old added: “It is devastating and his family must be heartbroken – it is so sad.”

Operations manager Tony Ceagrave, 51, added: “It is shocking to hear that something like that happened in Chilwell. “It is very strange – we take our dogs on walks regularly, even when it is dark and we never feel uneasy, because we know the area is safe.

“It is very sad. I hope the family are coping well.” A 39-year-old man from Doncaster, was charged with manslaughter on January 6.

Detective Inspector Becky Hodgman said: “This is an extremely difficult time for Mr Robinson’s family and they are being supported by our specialist trained officers.

“A significant investigation has been ongoing since the incident and I would like to thank witnesses who have come forward to assist our investigation.

“We urge anyone who hasn’t yet spoken to officers to get in touch if they witnessed the incident or know anything about the circumstances leading up to it.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101, quoting incident 280 of December 16.
