Garden centre bid discussed
NEW plans could mean a garden centre is built on land that has been derelict for almost 20 years.
The site was the former location of the old Three Bridges pub on Gritley Mews, The Meadows, before it closed in 2004.
AG Fencing wants to create a retail site to sell fencing and general garden products.
Now neighbours have shared their views on the scheme.
Nurse and interpreter Isha Yousafzi, 50, of Gritley Mews, is looking forward to a possible garden centre where she could take her grandchildren.
She said: “Hopefully it’s turning into a garden centre – that would be wonderful. It will make the place prettier and it would be wonderful for the kids.
“Before there were a lot of squatters and drugs and stuff like that.
“We were all thinking what’s going to happen, as we all have kids and it’s quite scary when they are coming home.”
Retired Derrick Benjamin, 72, of Gritley Mews, also welcomed the plans.
He said: “It’s been an eyesore – although people come and clean it up every so often, it’s just an eyesore.
“A garden centre would be nice just there.”
Mohammad Ahmed, 36, thought a garden centre would be “good for the local residents and community”.
He added: “It would be nice to have it. If it’s a garden centre or housing, just as long as the space is used.” But not all residents were happy. Retired Graham Lansdell, 68, of Gritley Mews, has lived in the area for almost 30 years.
He said: “It should be residential, not commercial. “We were really in support of the previous planning application for a dozen or so houses.
“I really think it ought to be houses, I think we need more houses than anything else. “We did have a Homebase garden centre less than half a mile away, and that got closed.” The application is currently pending consideration by Nottingham City Council.
