Town fears traffic ‘nightmare’

CONCERN OVER KNOCK-ON EFFECT OF ROADWORKS

TEMPORARY traffic lights are “a nightmare” which will cause chaos in Long Eaton, claim people who live there.

Three-way traffic lights have been put up on Fields Farm Road in Long Eaton.

The work began this week and is due to finish on February 21.

The work is because of the construction of the new Forbes Park business estate.

It involves excavation to form two new site entrances.

Road kerbs and footpath edgings are also being installed along with surfacing work to tie into existing carriageway.

But residents on Bosworth Way, just off Fields Farm Road, say that “it will be chaos” for Long Eaton.

Tom Clifford, 39, a security worker at East Midlands airport, said: “It’s a nightmare.

“Before we have had three sets of major traffic lights and roadworks in the whole of Long Eaton.

“So everywhere you want to go we’ve had roadworks.”

Mr Clifford added: “It was recent when they had dug through Long Eaton – so we have already had that road a nightmare before.

“Everybody tries to divert so the mini roundabout near the railway just can’t cope with it.”

Another resident, Paul Bates, 64, also said there would be chaos in the town.

Mr Bates said: “It’s not the first time – right before Christmas there were lights up for a number of occasions which caused chaos down

Fields Farm Road.

“Probably on peak times – it just makes the visit to Long Eaton add 20 minutes to your journey, for a fiveminute journey.

“I just find another way to go into Long Eaton but that makes the other routes busy.

“When they put the lights there it causes a knock-on effect to the roundabout near the pub – if the level crossing comes down it causes chaos in Long Eaton.

“So it’s bad enough without temporary traffic lights being put in really.”

Angela Mann, 60, who is also a nearby resident, said it wasn’t going to make life easy for those living in Long Eaton.

“There’s not a lot you can do,” she said.

“They’ve got to do their work – yes, it will be chaos because the whole of Long Eaton will get blocked out.

“So whichever way you go you’re going to get stuck in traffic.

“It doesn’t make life easy – especially if you’ve got a job or the schools.”
