Festival spotlight is on street art
VOLUNTEER-RUN GALLERY IS TO HOST POPULAR EVENT
NOTTINGHAM’S popular street art festival is set to return to the city for its ninth year.
The event will be held at Surface Gallery, on Southwell Street in Sneinton, from Wednesday, July 23, to Saturday, August 13.
The exhibition calls for street artists to submit their artwork with a focus on local talent to the gallery before Saturday, July 9.
The gallery often sees hundreds of entries, including international offerings. The launch party will take place on Friday, July 22, from 6pm with a DJ set from Osbourne Identity and Caribbean food from Dumplin Shack.
Local brewery Pheasantry will provide a range of ales on the night on the donation bar.
The submission can include graffiti, illustration, paste up, graphics, yarn bombing, sticker tagging, print, or light bombing. All submissions will be displayed as they fit through the gallery door, and artists can submit up to six per person to be hung salon style.

The winning artist will also be offered a solo exhibition in Surface Gallery’s alternative artspace: Le Loovre
Lawton of Skate Nottingham and Skateboard GB; and 2022 Street Art Festival prizewinner Finsbury Park
Deltics. Some of the prizes include a £25 Montana voucher, £25 Bonington voucher, £25 London Camera
Exchange voucher, £25 Knit Nottingham voucher and £25 Mimm voucher.
The winning artist will also be offered a solo exhibition in Surface Gallery’s alternative artspace: Le Loovre. The entire exhibition spans the three-story building, including the alley walls at the back. The large murals on display remain part of the gallery after the exhibition closes.
Surface Gallery is a not-for-profit social enterprise and gallery space that exists to support artists through professional exhibitions, events, and residencies.
The gallery is entirely volunteerrun.
The festival started in 2013 after an exhibition called Salon des Refuses, organised by Nottingham Castle, was hosted by Surface and other locations across the city in 2011.
