Notts higher than average for MOT fails

THE MOT failure rate is higher in Nottinghamshire than the national average.

It comes after data from the DVSA shows that over the last year Nottinghamshire has a failure rate of 31.17% compared to 29.21% nationally.

The data combines the 589,322 MOT tests taken in NG postcodes between 2021 and 2022.

It has revealed that the most common failure reason for cars in Nottinghamshire is lamps, reflectors and electrical equipment.

Just over 73,000 cars across Nottinghamshire failed for this reason.

The least common reason in the area is road wheels where 2,239 cars failed.

Chris Lunn, Category Manager for Halfords Autocentres, said: “Lighting and signalling issues are the number one reason we see vehicles failing their MOT.

“This can often be for something as small as a blown bulb, so it’s worth checking these well ahead of your MOT date.”

Nationally, the most common reason for failure is suspension with just under three million cars failing for that reason in the last year.

Chris Lunn added: “Since the coronavirus lockdowns, we have seen a rise in steering and suspension repairs due to vehicles sitting inactive over a longer period of time or less frequent use.”

Halfords are offering free steering and suspension checks at their Autocentres to help with the problem as well as fitting new bulbs.

RAC Head of Roads Policy Nicholas Lyes added: “Drivers should always check their vehicles and get them serviced regularly which should help to bring down the MOT failure rate.

“What this data also proves is that any attempt by the Government to change the MOT requirement to every two years would lead to a situation where we have more dangerous vehicles on our roads.”
