‘Covid? No need to worry – it’s just part of life’

PEOPLE IN WORST AREA FOR INFECTIONS NOT CONCERNED

GEDLING South is currently one of the worst areas in Nottinghamshire for Covid-19 cases – but the people there say they’re not worried by the figures.

In the seven days to July 1, according to the most recent available data from the Government, Covid cases in Gedling

South have increased by

266.7 per cent. The total number increased by 32 to 44.

This is currently one of the highest case rates in the county.

Keyworth South also has high rates, with reported case rates which have increased by 68.8 per cent.

But residents and business owners told the Post that the virus was now merely a part of life and that people were simply getting on with it.

Janet Whiten, owner of Whitens News, was puzzled as to why Gedling South had one of the highest rates.

The 75-year-old said:

“It makes you wonder why, doesn’t it?

“It’s not overly populated, I can’t understand it – we must be extra friendly here.

“Even the doctors now, when you go, you don’t have to wear a mask.

“People still come in here with a mask – I assume they must be extra vulnerable.”

Daniel Howard, 41, who moved to the area in February, says he is not scared of the virus. “My mum and dad just got it last week – I didn’t get it. They had not had it since Covid came out. I don’t live in fear of it – it’s become part of life. You only pay attention when it comes home.” Matt Elliott, 42, owner of family business Phil’s Plaice, said some customers were still wearing masks, but added: “I don’t worry about it anymore. It is what it is. “Everyone seems to get on with it now. We do get one or two with masks on. I don’t think you hear of anybody now, a year ago you’d hear about it from customers and others. Now you don’t.”
