POLICE have released a statement after a man is reported to have been attacked in a city centre street.

Police were called to Mansfield Road, Nottingham, at around 3.20am on Saturday.

A man in his twenties suffered significant facial injuries after he was assaulted with what are believed to be blunt weapons.

He remains in a stable condition in hospital.

Detectives investigating what happened would like to speak to anyone who witnessed or heard the assault, which happened near the junction of Fulforth Street.

They would particularly like to hear from any drivers who may have dashcam footage of the area at the time of the incident.

Detective Constable Alan Prentice, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “This was a violent and sustained assault that left a young man in hospital with significant injuries.

“We are working hard to understand what happened here and would like to speak with any additional witnesses who saw or heard what happened.”

People in Nottingham city centre expressed concern about another serious incident after seeing the police cordon on Saturday morning.

Belinda Brown, 59, from Mapperley, said: “It’s sad and worrying. I have a lad who is also in his 20s so whenever I see anything I just put myself in the family’s position.

“If he recovers from his injuries he might still be haunted the rest of his life. It’s right in the city centre as well.”

Stephanie Staton, 59, an administrator from Basford, said: “Why do people do stuff like this?

“Families will be ruined by this and people won’t feel safe in the city. I don’t really hear much about violence like this, but it is shocking to see.”

Two men, aged 41 and 38, have been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm and remain in police custody.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call 101 quoting incident 318 of July 16.
