Protest at the petrol pumps

-

ENVIRONMENTAL campaigners Extinction Rebellion took part in a protests outside a Nottingham petrol station yesterday.

The campaign group said its members are holding protests at selected Nottinghamshire petrol stations this week to encourage residents to boycott Shell and BP.

Campaigners were positioned outside the BP Garage in Mansfield Road, Daybrook, at 11am. The petrol station remained open for business. In a statement, the group said the protest was to highlight that although consumers are facing rising fuel costs, Shell and BP continue to make huge profits.

Katherine Buckland, a climate activist from Bulwell, said: “Both Shell and BP have plans for massive expansion, against the advice of scientists. As if they’re not wealthy enough they want even more money.”

Speaking at the scene of the protest in Mansfield Road, group spokesperson Etienne Stott, 43, from The Meadows, said: “Shell and BP are continuing to rake in huge profits whilst ordinary people are facing a cost of living crisis and climate emergency.”

The former Olympic champion canoeist added: “We are showing that ordinary people can stand up to the fossil fuel industry and make a difference. I think more and more people are receptive to the climate emergency and more and more people know our government is not doing enough.”

One motorist, Eric Mooey, said he appreciated the work the protesters were doing. “I wouldn’t be filling up here unless I had to,” he said.

The garage declined to comment. Shell and BP have also been approached for comment.
