A NEW shop specialising in cakes has opened on Sneinton Dale.

The Cake Box has already had a soft launch, but plans to fully open in the next two weeks.

The shop has taken over a building that had been empty for a few years and has brought a new lease of life to the street.

The Cake Box is a franchise that has branches all over the UK.

Owner Vikas Sangwan said: “This Cake Box is lucky number 200 and it’s the first to be open in a community, as normally we set up near the city centre.

“The feedback we got from customers was that they were struggling with parking and carrying the cakes.

“We thought we would test an opening in the community, and it’s perfect for us here as it’s got a lot of parking.

“It’s a risk to see if it will work or not, but it’s up to the public to see if we are successful or not.

“If we are successful then it will open the door for more communitybased businesses.”

The store has a wide selection of cakes from victoria sponge and red velvet to chocolate. They are decorated on-site at the Sneinton shop before being popped into the display fridges. Customers can choose a whole cake or just a slice if they fancy a treat.

“We only do egg-free cakes as so many people have allergies. That’s why we are using soya instead of eggs, but taste-wise it’s better. It tastes better than eggs.”

Vikas said there has been a very positive reaction to the shop opening. The team has seen a steady flow of customers both local and further afield.

He added: “Everyone understands that this is local and they want to keep it so they are praying that it works. They want to support us.

“We just had two customers now who said they felt lucky that it had come to the community.”

Vikas is also hiring locally and has so far created six new jobs, of which he has already recruited four parttime team members. He plans to offer delivery.

He said: “We have opened on Just Eat today and we will do delivery or collection. Delivery is a key focus for us, especially in this heat where people don’t want to go to shops.

“We are looking for more drivers at the minute. We want to deliver the cakes so people can eat and enjoy them at home.”

HOPES THAT KEEPING IT LOCAL WILL BE KEY TO SUCCESS
