Hundreds of cannabis plants found growing in derelict pub
MAN 43, ARRESTED ON SUSPICION OF DRUG PRODUCTION AFTER POLICE RAID IN SNEINTON
A LARGE cannabis grow was discovered by police at a derelict pub in Sneinton on Monday morning.
Officers raided The Bendigo in Thurgarton Avenue shortly before 10am.
A cannabis grow of between 300 and 400 plants was found by Nottinghamshire Police.
A 43-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of production of drugs and remains in police custody.
Police said the plants would be taken away and destroyed.
The warrant was executed by the Operation Reacher and neighbourhood officers based at Byron House, along with Tactic Support Group officers.
Sergeant Lou Ellis, who leads the city centre Operation Reacher team, said: “The cultivation of cannabis is dangerous not only to the property and people at the address, but also to the wider community with the risk of fire.
“Cannabis cultivation and drug dealing are often linked to serious violence, anti-social behaviour and puts some of our most vulnerable communities at risk.
“Information from local people is key to our ongoing work, so we would urge the public to keep reporting to us because the more information we get, the better intelligence picture we can build and the more robust action we can take.
“We really value information supplied by the public and will always act on it, where appropriate, to make our communities safer.”
Anyone with information about cannabis production or dealing is urged to contact Nottinghamshire Police on 101.
Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.
The Bendigo was tied to the Home Brewery and was named after the legendary William ‘Bendigo’ Thompson, the 19th century prize fighter and boxer.
The pub was later renamed The Hermitage, and then became a restaurant called Zam Zam.
Last year, developers tabled plans to convert the vacant pub, which was described at the time as an “eyesore”, into flats.
However, the plans for the new flats were subsequently turned down by Nottingham City Council.
