TWISTED SISTER ACT

- By KEVIN COOPER

ON Tuesday night, the Californian trio of Haim sisters finally got to make the stage at the Motorpoint Arena on what turned out to be the hottest night of the year to showcase their Grammy-nominated third album, Women In Music Pt III.

Arriving late, which seems to be the norm for them, the crowd soon forgot that transgression as middle sister Danielle strolled out wearing their usual uniform of black bikini top and leather trousers for opener Now I’m In It, followed by the eldest, Este, and the youngest, Alana, who finished the song trading off drum solos.

Despite the heat, the crowd were up and bouncing along with the trio and their slick backing band for a set that leaned heavily on their latest album, while also peppering in standouts from their 2013 debut, Days Are Gone.

There was a choreographed dance routine on I Know Alone, an amusing interlude from Este before the funk-laden 3AM kicked in.

With their unique way of delivering stand-up comedy as opposed to between-song banter, they entertained the crowd from the off.

And even when those ad-libs were at their shakiest, they upped the tempo as they danced, traded instruments and powered through the fan favourites.

My Song 5 showcased pounding drums and Gasoline got a warm sing-along.

Alana’s vocals on I’ve Been Down were a real highlight before the song morphed into a competition as to which side of the arena could sing the loudest.

There was excellent guitar work on FUBT before a fabulous sax-filled Los Angeles had everyone’s attention.

Throughout the set Alana had euphoric moments on the keys,

Danielle – who led the vocals – held court on drums, while Este’s famous bass face had the crowd amused.

Ending the main set with Forever and Summer Girl, the sisters returned to perform an encore of The Wire And The Steps, bringing an end to their 90-minute set.
