Park youths caught smoking cannabis

LOCALS FEAR POOR BEHAVIOUR WILL PUT OFF VISITORS

RESIDENTS have voiced their disappointment after a group of youths had to be taken home after being caught drinking and smoking cannabis in a park near locals’ homes.

Some people fear the anti-social behaviour at Rockley Memorial Park, in Radcliffe-on-trent, will stop others using the space.

Nottinghamshire Police searched the group during a patrol on Sunday, July 17, and small quantities of cannabis were found and seized.

Residents said it was a shame as the park is a beautiful space.

Ann Harbidge, who has lived in the area for 50 years, said this behaviour could stop people from wanting to visit the park. The 83-year-old said: “I think it’s wrong. You can go whatever age you are, you want to sit and chat, look at the flowers, it’s for everyone. If they do go a lot, people will stop going. It’s a lovely place, it’s a shame. It’s beautiful, it really is lovely.”

A resident who lives near to the park and wished to remain anonymous said: “I have mixed feelings. They are not being problematic. They don’t really bother anyone and don’t really engage with anyone one.

They added: “It’s a family space and it has been a problem for a while, on and off, not consistent. I know people have been concerned, it’s probably not nice for the people who live with a house that backs on to the park.

“It’s unfortunate, it’s a really pleasant space and puts people off going. It’s difficult as kids need somewhere to go.”

Richard Hunt, 63, said it was difficult to prevent groups of youths from acting in an anti-social way. Mr Hunt said: “It’s disappointing, it’s a nice park. It’s tough because you can’t stop these groups, it’s a nice space and people like to use it. It is a shame.”

Rushcliffe South Police said: “After recent reports of anti-social behaviour in Radcliffe on Trent, officers were out on patrol over the weekend. On Sunday evening, July 17, whilst patrolling the War Memorial Park, groups of youths were found to be drinking and smoking cannabis.

“Six males and one female were searched and small quantities of cannabis was found and seized. The individuals involved were taken back home to their parents and issued with a community resolution notice.”

To report anti-social behaviour call police on 101 or contact them through social media channels.
