Street name honour for football star’s dad
NEW BUILDS PAY TRIBUTE TO PIT WORKERS AND SCIENTIST
A STREET on one of Nottinghamshire’s largest new-build estates is to be named after the father of one of English football’s leading strikers.
Hundreds of homes are being built at Chase Farm, which sits near the £49m Colliery Way bypass, and the latest street names have now been unveiled.
One street on the £140m estate looks set to be named Lincoln Drive, after coal miner Lincoln Cole. Mr Cole was also the father of Nottingham Forest and Manchester United legend Andy Cole, who helped win eight major trophies for the team and is now the thirdhighest goal-scorer in the Premier League with 187.
Lincoln Cole was born in Kingston, Jamaica, and travelled to the UK at a time after the Second World War when members of the Commonwealth were being employed in British industries. He joined pit workers at Gedling Colliery in 1965 and spoke of his time as being “rough and scary” but with “great spirit”. His son, Andy, also spent time with Forest and racked up hundreds of appearances for various teams. The Reds recently secured a position in the Premier League.
In total there will be four new streets and four fitting names have been proposed by Gedling Borough Council. Running with the coalmining theme and the area’s heritage, another proposed street name is Fitzalbert Gardens,

after Fitzalbert Taylor, a prominent coal miner in Gedling for 25 years.
Gourdine Grove has been selected to pay tribute to Meredith Gourdine, an energy scientist who converted low grade coal into affordable electrical energy.
Mr Gourdine, who died in 1998, also won a silver medal for long jump in the 1952 Summer Olympics.
The final proposed street name is Solar Mews, a reference to the use of solar power on the site.
The council’s building control team had liaised with current developers and consulted with local ward and parish councillors to come up with the names.
They have been recommended for approval pending final sign-off.
