GT Classic promises epic southern-hemisphere drives
South Africa’s rich motorsport history will be the focus of a new event from the same team that created the impressive South African Historic Grand Prix.
UK-based Speedstream, which is to run the Grand Prix festival from 25 November to 2 December to celebrate the country’s pre-war motorsport history, has announced a new event called the GT Classic, to be run in 2019.
Catering for road-legal sports and sports-racing cars built from 1950 to 1975, the GT Classic promises to be an epic adventure spanning nearly 3000km and five racetracks in eight days, in a part-race, part-time-trial, part-tour-style event across spectacular South Africa.
It will run in two categories, one for those intent on the touring experience, the other for more competition-minded participants wanting to exercise their classic a little harder. The touring entrants will have the same experience, but without being timed.
Running from 1 to 9 November 2019, the event will start in Johannesburg with a morning race at the legendary Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit, and will continue in a similar vein with amazing scenery, some closed road sections and fine dining. Other highlights will be a visit to East London, where South Africa’s first-ever GP was held, driving the Garden Route and visiting the Franschhoek Motor Museum. See thegtclassic.com.
