3 reasons to visit Miami

-

With its Cuban-edged favours, art deco good looks and conspicuously glamorous food, there are many reasons to visit Miami, especially in midsummer, when sultry temperatures mean prices tend to dip a litle. But the fact that Florida’s party city has started paying as much atention to its chefs as its bartenders has put it back on the food map, not least for its hotel restaurants. Here are three of the best newbies. 1. SEAGRAPE Michelle Bernstein’s cooking at Seagrape restaurant in the new Thompson Hotel is creating a stir. Drawing her ingredients from producers across South Florida, typical dishes range from crispy veal sweetbreads with smoky cranberry beans and conft grapes to snapper with paella rice cake, sugar snaps, shrimp chorizo and sofrito broth. thompsonhotels.com

2. Part of the hip Freehand Hostel, which has already drawn a cult following with its bar, 27 makes the most of its historic seting with colourful, playful decor. The kitchen uses produce grown in its roof-top garden to serve casual Middle Eastern and Caribbean-inspired dishes such as miso-tahini ‘massaged’ kale with shaved fennel and crispy chickpeas, and the local catch of the day with a coconut-curry broth. thefreehand.com

3. MATADOR ROOM For old-world glamour in a new-world seting Matador Room at the city’s new Edition hotel serves Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s take on Latin and Caribbean food in chandelier-strung surroundings. Seasonal small and large plates range from peekytoe crab and corn friters with smoked chilli tartar sauce to marinated grilled NY strip with chimichurri and fries. It also serves the best huevos rancheros in town if you’re afer a sophisticated breakfast. editionhotels.com
