The post pandemic impact of COVID-19 on aviation and its support industries is proving to be far more damaging than any major crises faced in the past, as the economic urgency to return to 'normal' is balanced against the risk of second waves.

Silo sabotage

Sadly a silo approach has been adopted by governments across the world who have issued guidelines based on their independent risk assessment and interpretation of the situation. Airline and airport translations of the health and safety guidelines issued by their respective safety executives has also been variable, with a wide range of PPE standards, aircraft seat configurations and processes being communicated.

Every point of contact throughout the supply chain is being re-evaluated and re-engineered due to the new safety guidelines and the anticipated significant volume reduction in the short to medium term outlook.

Unfortunately, all this activity is adding to the confusion of passengers who are already faced with multiple concerns to overcome before feeling confident to travel again. The aviation industry as a whole needs stringent, coordinated biosecurity measures and then to communicate them effectively. The need for collaborative, proactive intervention and strong leadership is clear. If we allow this pandemic to run its course, and we continue to react in a piecemeal fashion to its challenges, it will be many years before recovery is seen and the devastating list of business casualties will continue to grow.

Our common purpose and immediate focus must be for the industry to recover in a safe and sustainable manner as soon as possible, and to establish just what the new rules of engagement will be when it does.

Those in my team are committed to supporting those shaping the new normal and determined to do all we can to help get the industry we love back on its feet.

Our common purpose must be for the industry to recover in a safe and sustainable manner as soon as possible
