Concerns are growing over danger road

BICKERSTAFFE residents have been driven to distraction by long grass compromising views along the Rainford Bypass.

The grass along the A570 has grown too tall for drivers to see oncoming traffic clearly as they pull across to the dual-carriageway.

This has created concern amongst locals, who worry that the issue poses a safety concern.

One Bickerstaff local told Visiter.co.uk: “Vehicles simply cannot see - if you are in the central reservation turning right towards the M58 you have to cross the outside lane of traffic and simply cannot see what is coming.

“You take your life in your hands.

“This is an accident waiting to happen. A car slamming into the side of another at 60 mph does not bear thinking about.”

Locals say they have complained to the Council on numerous occasions, with Bickerstaffe Parish Council also taking up the issue. A group of residents claimed they have been told that Lancashire County Council had subcontracted the work to West Lancashire Borough Council, and that the Parish Council had been assured that the grass cutting would start on Monday June 13, which still has not taken place.

One local said: “If you try to turn you can’t see what’s coming in the fast lane - potentially doing 60 mph - and you don’t see it until it’s right upon you.

“If something were to hit a car or a motorbike it would be a fatal accident.”

Residents living along Rainford Road are forced to cross the central reservations to get out, and the Bypass is busy with commercial and agricultural traffic every day, in addition to residential drivers.

West Lancashire Borough Council said: “The grass verges along the Rainford Bypass are due to be cut by contractors in the week commencing Monday June 13.

“We expect this work to take place as planned, weather permitting.”
