Learners praised for completed community project

-

PATHWAYS learners at West Lancashire College have recently completed their community project at the Birchwood Centre in Skelmersdale.

Whilst completing the project, the learners, aged 16-18, studying Pathways entry three, level one and two, have been able to explore their strengths and develop skills that are transferable to other programmes of study. The community project focuses largely on their teamwork skills and they have undertaken a wide range of fundraising activities including a fitness challenge and raffle in college in order to buy the equipment required to complete the project.

Learners have been working on renovating the three gardens at the Birchwood Community Centre. The team made improvements to the practical facilities and boundaries, lawns and patio areas. They worked hard to clear weeds and design and build flower beds.

Barbara Mooney, manager at the Birchwood Centre said: “The Pathways Learners and staff have made a huge difference to the gardens at the centre, the gardens are now pleasant places for young people to sit, socialise and chill out. This has taken real hard work and tenacity and they made a brilliant effort to fundraise to fund the materials they needed. The staff and residents are very grateful for their contribution. It was a pleasure to have them at the centre, their enthusiasm and humour was inspiring. They are a credit to the college.”

Course tutors, Ryan, Tina and Nikie said “We are all very proud of what the learners have achieved. They have all been a pleasure to work with.”
