Fun day for diabetes support
ADIABETES family fun day took place at St Anne’s Community Hall, Ormskirk, and raised £765.
The event was organised by the paediatric diabetes team at Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust.
Funds will be used to buy educational material for group workshops.
The team collaborated with Lancelots – the local children and families with diabetes support group for Southport, Formby, Ormskirk and Children’s Diabetes Club (affiliated to Diabetes UK).
More than 150 children with type 1 diabetes and their families, from Sefton and West Lancashire, attended the day, which included a raffle, cake sale, tombola, games and local firefighters who entertained the crowds. The day was boosted by donations and many volunteers who helped out.
Dr May Ng, consultant paediatric endocrinologist, Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust and chair of the UK Association of Children’s Diabetes Clinicians, said: “Thanks so much to everyone who helped make the day so successful.
“Incidence of diabetes is on the rise, especially among children. Most children are affected by type 1 while we are also seeing a rise in type 2 diabetes in children.
“It was heartening to see such a lot of support and funds raised will go towards educational programmes to benefit children and families.”
