Local angler Nelson keeps his eye in at Rosemary Wood

I was born a daydreamer and I confess it without shame.

As a keen fisherman and wildlife enthusiast I’ve always taken every opportunity to explore the wildlife around me, and when fishing I always make a mental note of every birdcall I hear and study the surrounding bankside habitat with keen interest.

A walk beside any water will always reveal a rich and flourishing gallery of wildlife.

Mature wild hedgerows, which have been colonised by nature, canal towpaths, park lakes and even the purpose built commercials are notable for enormous varieties of woodland plants and animals.

Walkers often raise the question about what is actually in the water during the summer months.

Very often fish make their presence known and bask in the sunny days in good numbers.

I reflected on a number of these thoughts this week as I took to the bank and studied a fishery on the outskirts of Liverpool at Haskayne – Rosemary Wood Fishery.

Walking the bank and examining this idyllic venue.

I was intrigued to once again take note not only of the fantastic wildlife, but also the thoughts of anglers describing Rosemary as the ‘Boddingtons’ of the north west.

Well known for being the big fish venue of the Midlands, ‘Boddy’s’ is very much a household name within angling circles, but by the standards of the huge carp regularly being taken nowadays, it’s easy to understand why the reputation of Rosemary is growing as quickly as the fish are.

It was also pleasing to hear of the progress of an angler who, under the guidance of the Dewhurst brothers, has now ventured into the match world after serving his apprenticeship and found his way on both pools.

William Nelson, having fished just a handful of matches, successfully notched his first win with a creditable 87lb and is one I’m sure will be seen in the winners enclosure on a regular basis.

This week’s match honours were taken by Phil Dewhurst, who struck a magical ton, taking 101.14.0 with carp to 10lb on pellet waggler.

Second-placed Chris Boland took carp to 15lb with 92.10 on the method feeder.
